Designing for the evening
In the Gulf, the best hours of the day come after five. We plan our buildings around them.
For much of the year, life in Dubai and Abu Dhabi moves outdoors once the sun is low. Terraces fill, pools are warm, and the light turns gold for an hour before it goes.
We orient living rooms and terraces to the west whenever a site allows, and we shade them deeply so that the same rooms stay comfortable at midday.
Lighting is designed with the same care: low, warm and indirect, so that a house glows from within rather than lighting up the garden.
